In the latest episode of the Living Fully Podcast by FFK, host Cody-Ann Barrett sits down with Chellan Smith, a vibrant, active, and health-conscious woman whose life changed in 2020 when she received a diagnosis no one expects to hear: breast cancer.

Chellan’s journey is one of strength, early action, and a powerful reminder that being healthy does not always mean being protected.

“I was going to the gym four times a week, eating properly, doing everything right,” Chellan recalls. “Then one day, I found a lump in my breast. My sister, who’s a doctor, told me to check it out, and that decision saved my life.”

At just 38 years old, Chellan faced a whirlwind of tests, biopsies, and surgeries. Her mother had passed from breast cancer at 35, and genetic testing later revealed that she carried a rare condition called Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, which significantly increases her risk of developing multiple cancers throughout her life.

But one thing stood between fear and survival: health insurance.

“Health insurance saved my life,” she shares. “My sister insisted I get coverage, even when I felt I couldn’t afford it. That decision made all the difference. The surgeries, the chemo, the treatments… I couldn’t have done it without it.”
